The classic family movie scored the biggest opening weekend for a Christmas movie, earning $66 million during its first three days in the U.S.
The film features actors such as Benedict Cumberbatch, Rashida Jones, and Pharrell Williams to tell a 61- year- old tale of the Grinch who lives in solitude with his dog in a cave on Mount Crumpet. As his neighbors in Whoville begin to celebrate Christmas with a bang, he decides to pose as Santa Clause and steal their holiday cheer. When the townspeople see what has happened a small child reminds them what christmas is truly about, making even the Grinch’s heart warm.
Despite the groundbreaking opening The Grinch made, reviewing site Rotten Tomatoes only scored it as a 57%. Johnny Oleksinski from New York Post said, “it’s best for kids and adults who just can’t handle the angry, diabolical monster of films past.” Others, such as top critic Leah Greenblatt from Entertainment Weekly, said, ”the latest animated iteration of Christmas’ most famous nemesis might not be strictly necessary, but it’s still pretty fun – and revamped just enough to feel fresh.”
Despite the old tale it takes on The Grinch made history. The animated version is now the largest debut for any Christmas themed film, ironically toppling over an old version of The Grinch. Google users are loving the new take on the classic as well rating it at 88%.
