Nightcrawler, A Chilling Thrill Ride

Joe Knickerbocker, Staff writer

Nightcrawler is a neo-noir thriller following an unhinged man who begins a nocturnal hunt for grisly accidents and crimes in the hope of climbing Los Angeles’s social ladder filled with disturbing moments that will have you on the edge of your seat. Jake Gyllenhaal’s acting is the best I’ve ever seen from him in this movie. His chilling and riveting acting of a lonely sociopathic man’s descent into madness made me unnerved and queasy every scene he was in. Gyllenhaal’s character is oozing with threatening aggression and evil. His performance perfectly shows what his character is and made me feel relentlessly tense all throughout. The other actors play their roles very well, especially Reno Russo and Riz Ahmend. The film’s stunning shots of LA’s skylines and grim city streets at night is a treat to view and is flawlessly shot displaying beauty and horror. It is well paced and will have you glued to the movie waiting to see what comes next. It’s a movie that made me unsure if I wanted its main character to win in the end. Nightcrawler is written and directed by Dan Gilroy and this movie by far is his best work. The movie has gotten good reviews from critics and audiences. Rotten Tomatoes gave the movie a 95% and has an audience score of 86%. I found it profoundly disturbing yet I could not stop watching it. The movie, in my opinion, is everything a thriller should be. A must see. 10/10
