Heartstopper Explores Teen Sexuality

The uprising series, Heartstopper, was released on Netflix just earlier this year. The series is based on a comic book series, and although it currently only has one season, the show has captured the hearts of many people. Heartstopper is rated TV-14. It is a drama intended for teenage audiences, but it is a great show for people of all ages 14 and above.

The show follows year 10 Charlie and the development of his crush on Nick, a boy in the grade above him. Charlie is one of the few openly gay boys in the school and is often made fun of because of it. His best friends, Tao, Isaac and Elle are highly protective of him and aren’t afraid to stand up for him when needed. This begins to get difficult for Elle, however, because she comes out as transgender and transfers to the all-girls high school. The series follows the journey of all of the characters finding themselves and exploring who they truly are while fighting against the struggles of high school.

This show is directed by Euros Lyn and has a few famous actors as well as a couple of rising stars. Nick is played by Kit Connor, who is known for multiple movies that he played in during his life. He is followed by Joe Locke, who plays Charlie, and actors and actresses William Gao, Tobie Donovan, Yasmin Finney, and many more. It scores a full 100 on the Tomatometer,  and I highly recommend this show. It’s one of my favorites and it is definitely a cozy, feel-good show to watch.  It is an amazing representation for people of all different sexualities.
