Living in the USA, there are some striking differences compared to Thailand. One of the most
immediate things I miss is the rhythm of daily life in Thailand. The pace there feels more relaxed and
steeped in a sense of tradition. The sight of monks walking through the streets in the morning,
collecting alms, and the gentle hum of street vendors setting up their stalls for a new day is a
beautiful contrast to the faster, busier life in many parts of the USA.
I often think about the food. Thailand’s street food culture is something I deeply miss. Walking
through a bustling night market, where the air is rich with the aromas of grilled meats, fresh herbs,
and spices, is an experience I look forward to when I return. The simplicity of getting a freshly
prepared bowl of boat noodles or a perfectly balanced som tam (papaya salad) on almost any corner
is incomparable. In the USA, while there is diversity in food, there’s a sense of something missing
when it comes to the raw authenticity and vibrant flavors of Thai cuisine.
The landscape in Thailand is another thing that feels very different. Thailand’s lush greenery, dense
jungles, and the serene sight of rice paddies stretching across the countryside contrast with the
vastness of highways and modern cityscapes in the USA. I miss the proximity to nature that Thailand
offers, whether it’s a short trip to a peaceful temple in the mountains or a quick escape to a pristine
beach on the islands. The sense of connection to nature is something I look forward to when I return.
But there are things I enjoy about the USA, too. The openness of the culture and the freedom to
express individuality are refreshing. The diversity of people from all around the world has taught me
to appreciate different perspectives. There’s also a sense of opportunity and space here, both
physically and metaphorically. The vast landscapes, from deserts to mountains, and the opportunity
to pursue new ventures, are exciting and inspiring.
Though I miss the warmth of Thailand both in the weather and in the smiles of the people there is
something thrilling about discovering new places and ways of life in the USA. It makes me
appreciate the comforts of home even more, and I look forward to carrying pieces of both worlds with
me wherever I go.
