Ready Player One Creates Virtual World of Possibilities

Jonas Numeier

Ready Player One is a science fiction/fantasy CGI animation movie, released in 2018, based on the 2011 book of the same name, written by Ernest Cline. It’s a good action movie with a fairly easy plot, which makes it easy for you to follow it.

It was directed by Steven Spielberg and the main characters are played by Tye Sheridan, Olivia Cooke,  Lena Waithe and Ben Mendelsohn.

The movie is set in 2045 and the world is on the edge of absolute chaos, but the people find a way to escape in the virtual reality universe OASIS created by James Halliday. After his death, he promises his whole fortune and the ownership of the OASIS to the person who finds a digital Easter Egg, hidden somewhere in the OASIS. When Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan) enters the competition, he finds himself in a mysterious hunt through a virtual world filled with danger, as players hunt for keys and find clues to unlock the prize. Cline draws heavily on 1980s pop culture in his work, and the movie follows through, to some extent, with numerous references, like Atari games, The Iron Giant, The Shining movie, Back to the Future car, and Buckaroo Bonzai. Rotten Tomatoes gave this movie a 72% rating. I would rate this movie a eight or nine out of ten because of the action and the great  display of a virtual reality world which we might be able to create in the future. If you are a fan of the 1980s you will enjoy all the pop culture references. If you do not know anything about the 1980s, these references may be lost on you.
