Varsity Football Clenches Narrow Win from New Lothrop
October 14, 2022
The Ovid-Elsie Marauders emerge victorious over the New Lothrop Hornets in a 14-13 battle.
This victory has cemented Ovid-Elsie’s presence in the varsity football playoffs that will
commence once the regular season ends. Additionally, this victory is an extra-sweet fruit for the
Marauders as it is the first victory against the Hornets since the two schools have first met.
Offensively, Ovid-Elsie succeeded in controlling both the clock and the field. The Marauders
ended up with a total 226 offensive yards with 161 being on the ground. Tryce Tokar led the
offense with 13 rushing attempts for 48 yards and a touchdown. Tokar also completed five passes
for 65 yards and another touchdown. Additionally, Logan Thompson followed up with another
11 carries for 48 yards as well.
The Ovid-Elsie defense is largely attributed for the win over New Lothrop. The defense
allowed 332 yards, but performed exceptionally well in the red zone. Clay Wittenberg led the
team with eight tackles and two tackles for loss. Cohen Tyler had 7.5 tackles, but with an
extremely important two interceptions. The second interception sealed Ovid-Elsie’s victory
when the Hornets entered the red zone in the fourth quarter. Perrien Rasch also helped the team
with an interception.
Wittenberg also blocked New Lothrop’s extra point attempt on their second touchdown, which
would prove vital to the game later on. This is due to Julien Mortier going 2/2 on his extra point
attempts when Ovid-Elsie reached the end zone. These two factors would pair with the
immaculate Marauder defense in the red zone, leading to an Ovid-Elsie victory.
This week, the Marauders look to face off against the 1-6 Mt. Morris Panthers. Yet again, this is
a conference game which will determine if Ovid-Elsie can have a share of the Conference
Championship. With a win over the Panthers and New Lothrop win over the Durand Railroaders,
Ovid-Elsie would hold a share over the conference for a second year in a row.
