The Marvels is a movie made by Marvel to be part of their cinematic universe. It was released on Nov. 10, 2023, with a budget of $270 million yet made $46 million at the box office. It was produced by Kevin Feige who decided to recast Brie Larson to play Captain Marvel. Like many other Marvel movies, the ratings on this one seem to be very weird.
The story follows the trio of Marvels who all have different powers that, when used, cause them to switch places randomly. Despite that, they band together to fight off the threat that attacks them. The reviews for The Marvels are mixed with it getting a 62% on the Tomatometer and an 84% on the audience score. This is a common trend with Marvel movies in the modern age. One reviewer said the movie kept hopping around which gave little time for emotional scenes to hit but still did a great story. That reviewer gave it a 3/5 while another gave the movie a 2.5/5 saying the story lost them early and never got them back.
Overall I would say the movie is alright. It continues the Marvel trend that I have been seeing where they are focusing less on CGI and story. The story, while still there, was hard to follow at times and some characters just seemed to do things randomly. There is also a push for something that is relevant in the world like politics, gender, or anything else related to a real-world problem. I personally don’t mind them that much but a movie about superheroes shouldn’t have to push and show what’s going on in the real world. It’s a made-up world that shouldn’t be connected to our world in such ways. I would give this movie a 4/5 and recommend it to any Marvel fan and anyone who is into superhero movies.
