I am reviewing the album Definitely Maybe by Oasis. This was Oasis’s debut album and
was an immediate critic and commercial success. It is an early example of Britpop and along
with What’s the Story Morning Glory, submitted Oasis’s spot as one of the most influential bands
of all time. They released three singles and one hit the UK’s top ten chart. It immediately became #1
on UK hot album charts and hit 8x platinum. Immediately after the release of this album a spur
of Britpop began getting big, among them being a band called Blur. Blur and Oasis would go on
to have a massive rivalry and compete to release their music earlier than each other.
This album is very classic sounding, just kind of plain rock but at the same time super
creative in some aspects. Heavy tambourine and creative vocal melodies. Frontman Noel
Gallagher was a pretty good lyricist on this record and had a couple of pretty stand-out lines–
one of my favorite being “I can’t tell you the way I feel because the way I feel is oh so new to
me” (Columbia). There are many super creative and classic guitar riffs such as the lead riff in
Supersonic. The music videos created for this album are aesthetically pleasing and draw me
into the band a lot.
Definitely Maybe is definitely masterful art. I bet they were up in the studio super hyped
on what they were cooking. From front to back, this album is so good, there isn’t a single bad
song on this album. Each song individually is also just really good and they are all on the same
level, except my favorite, Columbia. This is an album that literally anyone could get into if they
haven’t already heard of it and I would recommend it to anyone. It has over time become one of
my favorites as well and I give it an 8/10. No shade on Blur but Oasis is definitely better ?
