The trial of a Massachusetts woman accused of intentionally killing her boyfriend, a Boston
police officer, by driving her SUV into him, is set to commence on Monday, April 29th, amidst allegations of
a significant police cover-up.
Karen Read, 44, from Mansfield, is facing multiple charges, including second-degree murder, in
connection with the death of John O’Keefe, 46, in 2022. O’Keefe, a veteran of 16 years on the
police force, was discovered unresponsive outside the home of another Boston police officer
and was later pronounced dead at a hospital. Read has pleaded not guilty and is currently out
on bond.
Throughout the unfolding of the case, the defense has pursued a strategy to depict a
wide-ranging conspiracy involving a cover-up by the police. This stance has garnered Read a
devoted following, often seen protesting outside the courthouse, and has attracted national
attention to the case.
According to prosecutors, on the night of the incident in January 2022, the couple had visited
two bars and were en route to a party in Canton. Read claimed she felt unwell and opted not to
attend the party. While making a three-point turn at the party host’s home, O’Keefe exited
Read’s vehicle, and allegedly, she struck him with the SUV before driving away, prosecutors
asserted.
Although prosecutors have not specified where they believe Read went after the incident, they
claim she later panicked when she couldn’t reach O’Keefe. She returned to the party location
with two friends, where they found O’Keefe covered in snow. He was pronounced dead at a
hospital, with an autopsy determining head trauma and hypothermia as the cause of death.
One of Read’s friends recalled her expressing concern about possibly hitting O’Keefe.
Investigators discovered a cracked right rear tail light and scratches on her SUV near the location
where O’Keefe was found.
