Civil War was released to theaters on April 12, 2024, and directed by Alex Garland. It had a budget of around 50 million and was just able to make around 56 million at the box office. That just barely makes it a profit for the creators of the movie.
Civil War takes place in a dystopian-like United States in the near future. The movie follows a group of journalists as they find their way to DC. They hope to make it before a rebel faction finds its way to DC and descend on the White House. Just like the title says, its a civil war between the federal government and many different factions. It takes some aspects from the actual Civil War the US had but is different due to it taking place in modern times. Overall, the rating for the movie is decently high. It has an 81% on the Tomatometer and most reviews give it a 3.5/5. One review said it was an apocalypse in the eyes of a journalist which was new and refreshing, they gave it a 4/5. Another gave it a 5/5 saying the cast was perfect and the movie was very powerful. However, one reviewer gave it a 2/4 saying it left many questions unanswered and didn’t try to answer new ones that came up. Despite that most liked the movie and that can also be seen in the audience score which is at 72%.
Overall, I really did enjoy this movie. I’m a big history fan and the Civil War was something I did focus on for a while. Seeing what it would be like in modern times really tickled my funny bone. I wasn’t a huge fan of following journalists but I honestly forgot to dislike it once I really got into the movie. The plot does have some issues but you can really only notice if you are trying to dig deep into it. I would definitely recommend this movie to anyone who is interested in war or the civil war that happened back in 1861.
