Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty has had an electrifying and almost cartoonish start to the 2024-2025 college football season. He is now favored to win the Heisman and if he does he will become just the fifth non-QB to win the Heisman in the 2000s.
The junior running back has rushed for 1,031 yards and 16 touchdowns on 10.9 yards per carry for the 4-1 Broncos and is now averaging 206.2 rushing yards per game. His 1,031 yards through five games ranks eighth most in FBS history, according to ESPN Research.
Jeanty is now on pace to beat hall of famer Barry Sanders record. In the 1988 season Sanders had 1,002 rushing yards on 130 carries in only his first five games as well, at Oklahoma State. Later in the season he went on to win the Heisman and finished with a college football record 2,628 yards and 37 touchdowns.
Ashton Jeanty should easily win the Heisman if he keeps this up but he does have another competitor Travis Hunter. Hunter has played about 100 snaps each game as a WR and DB. In his five games he has had 46 catches for 561 yards and six TDs. On defense he has 16 tackles, two interceptions, and three passes deflected. Hunter could give Jeanty a run for his money, but statistics show that Jeanty has the best odds to win.
