Last weekend the Detroit Lions Proved themselves yet again, Defeating the Minnesota Vikings 31-29. The Score almost tells the story of the game, representing how close the game really was. The Lions started the game receiving the ball, but they had a quick three and out after Kayode Awoskia had back to back penalties, tainting the Lions first drive. Dan Campbell would then call for a fake punt on the first drive of the game which would not work and the Vikings would get the ball. In just a short span the Vikings would score first on an Aaron Jones 34 yard touchdown run. The Lions would fail another drive and then make a stop on defense which set up Vikings kicker Will Reichard for a 57 yard field goal, which was successful to put the Vikings up 10-0 in the first quarter. In the Second quarter the Lions finally came alive after Jahmyr Gibbs ran for an explosive 45 yard Touchdown. The entire second quarter was all Lions, with Amon Ra St-Brown catching a 35 yard touchdown and then to end the quarter, Gibbs ran in another Touchdown. All PAT’s by Jake Bates were also made. The score from here was 21-10 with the Lions Leading. After halftime the Vikings put together a good drive and scored a touchdown on a Justin Jefferson 25 yard reception. The Lions returned the favor 5 minutes later, scoring a 25 yard touchdown from Kalif Raymond. From there no one scored again until the 4th quarter, where the Vikings had back to back field goals of 40+ to go down 28-23. The Lions needed to score to stay in the lead, but then a rare David Montgomery Fumble happened, when a Vikings player punched out the ball, which was scoped up by Ivan Pace Jr and returned for a touchdown. The Vikings would then go for 2 and fail leaving them up by only one point. After a crucial stop by the Lions on defense again after not being able to score, the Lions got the ball back with little time left. However this was no problem for the Lions, because they would have a nearly perfect drive to set up a medium ranged field goal for their new kicker Jake Bates. Jake Bates would nail a 44 yarder down the middle to put the Lions up 31-29 with 15 seconds. Bates, who was actually a brick salesman just over a year ago, went perfect on the day and even ended up winning special teams player of the week in the NFC. With only 15 seconds left the Vikings tried to get in field goal range, and even got an extra chance for a Hail Mary, but the Lions defense held strong and ended the game with a final score of 31-29. Jared Goff had another Amazing Game, throwing 280 yards and two touchdowns on 22 completions out of 25 attempts, he also did not turn over the ball once. Amon Ra St-Brown also had a game, catching 8 balls for 112 yards and a touchdown. And finally, Jahmyr Gibbs had 116 Yards on only 15 carries and 2 touchdowns, he also had 44 receiving yards from 4 receptions. This was one of the most evenly matched games of the season stats wise, with The Lions having 391 total yards, 247 passing yards, 144 rushing yards, and an average of 7.0 yard per play. The Vikings had 383 total yards, 244 passing yards, 139 rushing yards, and 7.4 yards per play. This win took the Vikings out of first place in the NFC, while also handing the Vikings their first loss of the season, and now the Lions have a current record of 5-1 and they are currently number 1 in the NFC. These two teams will meet up again in the last game of their season at Ford Field, and it is expected to be just as good as the first game. The Lions next game will be at home in Ford Field, this Sunday at 1pm vs the Tennessee Titans who are 1-5. It will be aired on FOX.
