A member of the DOGE team assigned to work at the IRS will not be granted broad access to Americans’ personal tax information. This sparked from DOGE seeking broad access to an IRS system that contains the personal tax information of millions of Americans.
An agreement between the Office of Personnel Management and Internal Revenue Service states that DODGE employee Gavin Kliger, an employee of the OPM, USAID, and the State Department, will be assigned to the IRS for 120 days. Kliger has duties at the IRS, including surveying IRS software, identifying opportunities to modernize IRS technology and software, and also implementing safeguards against any fraud.
According to the IRS website, IDRS users “are authorized to access only those accounts required to accomplish their official duties.” The system can be used for “researching account information and requesting returns” and “automatically generating notices, collection documents and other outputs.”
