Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers by Kendrick Lamar was released on May 13, 2022. This
album contains 19 songs and is categorized as a hip-hop album. In 2023 this album was
nominated eight times for a Grammy and it ended up winning one of those that night.
Some of the most popular songs on this album are, Mother I Sober, N95, and Mirror.
All of these songs have been shared around the world a multitude of times. The song Mirror
tells the story of how pressured Kendrick feels being in the eye of the media and how stressful
that can be for a person, he feels like he has to be perfect for his fans not only physically but
through his music. Mother I Sober is a song about family issues and generational trauma that
he grew up with. When Kendrick says, “I’m sensitive, I feel everything, I feel everybody. One
man standin’ on two words, heal everybody.” Those are lyrics I believe many people could relate
to in some way, which is why I believe this song is so popular. N95 is a song that represents
how people felt during the time of the pandemic and after when everyone walked on eggshells
trying to prevent the outbreak again. This song also talks about dealing with everything else evil
in the world and trying to handle it in this era.
The most popular song in this album, in my opinion, is United in Grief. This is a fan
favorite and genuinely deserves its fame. It has been used over social media hundreds of
thousands of times, and can be relatable to many listeners. This song tells how he grieves and
deals with his pain by buying expensive items. One of the most popular lines of this song is “I
hope you find some peace of mind in this lifetime.” This verse starts off the song which leads to
Lamar telling his listeners about his grieving journey.
In conclusion, this is an excellent album, and I would recommend it to anyone who
enjoys rap or R&B. There are many relatable songs and lyrics, and the overall vibe of the album
is fantastic. I would rate it an 8/10.
