At First, At First is a post-hardcore band from Texas. The Courage of Shutting Up was released
on March 15 2025 on digital media streaming services like Spotify and SoundCloud. I’m unsure
about the names of the members because their presence online isn’t extremely solidified.
The first song on this ep is called Her Husband, the Rake. Its probably my favorite song on this
EP because of the general structure compared to the other songs on the EP. The drums are
crazy good on this mix and going absolute nuts the entire time.
The second song is It’s About Vampires.… To me I hear a lot of influences from other bands in
this song. This song has a cool riff at the start. At around 1:30 there is a bit of spoken word that
reminds me of something off a Lift to Experience song.
The Third song Slept, Woke Up, Slept, Woke Up, Miserable life follows this standard the band
has cemented in the EP. Kinda bland after listening to the other two songs.
The fourth song is I’ll Never Forget Where I Was This Day which takes a different approach and
includes some singing instead of just screaming. I like the alternation between screaming and
singing. The band loves to riff with distorted and fuzzed tones in their songs.
The last song In Spite of Artillery, this song to me is kinda a slow burner. The track length of this
song comes in at 6:33, most the other tracks come in at around 3 minutes. It has a lot of
dissonated guitar riffs and arpeggios that build up into a breakdown and screaming
After listening to The Courage of Shutting Up I’m really excited to see what this band has
coming for them in the future. I think they are doing all the right things musically and with their
image. Their EP had a lot of good moments on it. I love the riffs and I think this band knows
whats up. Gonna give this project a 7/10, cant wait to hear more from this band!
