A Minecraft Movie is a new Warner Bros. film hitting theaters. This movie has a little bit of everything: it is an adventure, comedy, action, fantasy, and kids’ and family movie. Released on April 4th, 2025, it has a 1h 41m runtime. It was rated PG for some scary images, language, and violence/action. Since this is such a new movie, it is currently only available to watch in theaters.
Jared Hess directed A Minecraft Movie, which features lots of notable actors. Some of the main actors include Jack Black, Emma Myers, and Jason Momoa, who you might know from movies like Aquaman, Dune, and Game of Thrones. Jack Black, who plays the main character Steve, has also appeared in films like School of Rock, Nacho Libre, and Kung Fu Panda.
In the film, four misfits are pulled through a portal into a place called the Overworld. This is a strange cubic wonderland that thrives on imagination. They must embark on a quest back to the real world with an expert crafter, Steve (Jack Black). To get back home, they will have to master this new world and help protect it from the evils inside it.
Rotten Tomatoes gave this movie a very low 48% on their Tomatometer. One of their critics says, “In a world where movies based on video games do not often land, this one at least manages to level up.” I agree with this statement. Although not everything in A Minecraft Movie is great, it is a fun watch for kids and people who used to play the game. Lots of the jokes hit, and Jack Black was very funny in this film. This movie was made for kids, so if you watch it, do not expect anything else. Still, I enjoyed watching it, but you might not as much as I did if you have never played the games. I would personally give this movie an 8/10. It is not a perfect movie, but it is a very fun watch. I recommend this movie to anyone who enjoys playing the Minecraft games and does not care if a movie is a little childish.
