The U.N. has said the World Food Programme has run out of food on Friday. Their warehouses are now empty, and it cannot supply charity kitchens that had been feeding a million people, half of Gaza’s population. Israel has been blocking their food and aid for two months now, 54 days from Friday, after Israel imposed a complete blockade on the Gaza Strip.
The World Food Programme has also said that all 25 bakeries in the Gaza Strip had shut down due to lack of fuel and flour in the territory. Food prices inside the strip have also skyrocketed to 1,400% of prices during the ceasefire. People are now being forced to scavenge for items to burn for cooking. Israel says its blockade is crucial to its goal of weakening Hamas’ control over the population, while Israeli officials have repeatedly stated there is “no shortage” of aid in Gaza and accused the militant group of withholding supplies.
The Israeli government has been accused of using starvation of civilians as a method of warfare in the Gaza Strip, which the U.N. said could amount to war crimes under international humanitarian law. The WFP warned that more than 2 millions people in Gaza now face starvation, epidemic disease, and death due to lack of safe water and short supply of fuel.
