In the Grass is the first and only album released by the band Splendora. It was released in 1995 under the publisher Koch Records. It only came with one CD release in the same year. Some genres of this album are categorized under alternative rock and grunge pop. The band is known for writing the opening theme of the tv show Daria.
The band consists of five different members who all have different skills and roles. Janet Wygel does lead vocals and guitar while her sister, Tricia Wygal, also does lead vocals but also plays the bass. Delissa Santos only plays the drums. The last two have more instruments with Cindy Brolsma playing cello and Jennifer RIchardson playing the violin. For the most part the violin and cello aren’t very noticeable, I don’t know if that’s because they are not really used or if it is just very hard to find.
The album has a great selection of songs, I think that all of them bring something different to the table which helps show how the band aren’t stuck making more of the same. “Sever” is for sure my favorite song on the album because of how its lyrics flow while the guitar seems to do its own thing. The most popular song off the album seems to be “Bee Stung Lips” and I can see how, it being the first track while also being the most catchy song is probably why it is the biggest but I also think it shows the most character out of all the songs. Out of the 14 songs “Rocker” just has to be my least favorite, it seems to be in a limbo of almost picking up the pace and speeding up but it just never does enough to satisfy me.
This album is really great; especially for being a debut album. There’s really only one or two stinkers which is awesome for a band still probably trying to find a sound. With the great spread of sounds I’ll give In the Grass by Splendora a good 3.4, it would’ve been higher if something knocked my socks off. This band didn’t do much after their debut album which sucks but it is just a very nice listen for me because I haven’t seen much like this.
