Starting May 15, Jordan Speith will be attempting to join just 6 other golfers in completing the Grand Slam. If he accomplishes it at Quail Hollow Golf Club at the PGA championship, this will become the first golf season with 2 players completing the career Grand Slam.
Speith won all of his other majors very early on in his career. He started with a Master’s win in 2015, and won both the U.SS. Open and the Open Championship back in 2017. Since then, Speith has dropped down the rankings. He has not finished a season in the top 10 in FedEx PGA points since 2018 and has not won a tournament since 2022 at the RBC Heritage.
Speith, being a fan favorite, has started to gain traction, and people are now calling for a Speith comeback year soon. He is coming off of a 4th place finish at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson, and he has not finished outside of the top 20 in any tournament since the Valspar Championship all the way back in March.
It is not going to be easy for Speith though, because he is in the field with Rory McIlroy, who has won at this golf course 4 times already, and Scottie Scheffler, who is coming off of a huge 9 stroke win at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson. He will also be with Xander Schauffele, the defending champion of the PGA Championship.
Many people are comparing this to be almost the exact same as when McIlroy accomplished it earlier this year because they had both went lots of years without a major, and had a few terrible fall-aparts when they could have won the tournament. One big difference though is when McIlroy won, he had not dropped below the number 10 spot in Fed Ex Points since his last major, but Speith has not been in the top 10 since his last major.
