Russia President Vladimir Putin said Sunday that his country is to restart direct talks with Kyiv about ending their war. He suggested the next discussions begin in Turkey May 15. Later Sunday, he was scheduled to speak to Recep Tayyip Erdo?an, Turkey’s president, with hopes of holding talks next week in Istanbul. He said there would be no preconditions on Russia’s part. In the past Ukraine walked away from such talks and broke ceasefire agreements, though both sides have been blamed for attacks during the last three ceasefires. He expressed his desire for serious talks with long-term consequences, such as long-lasting peace. Putin’s comments came on the last of the three-day ceasefire declared by Russia, and almost immediately after leaders from the United Kingdom, France, Poland and Germany threatened to increase sanctions if he doesn’t accept an unconditional, 30-day ceasefire.
