Tory Lanez is a Canadian singer, rapper, songwriter, and record producer. His sixth studio album, Alone at Prom, is one of his best works. This R&B and Synth-pop album was produced through Lanez’s independent label, One Umbrella Records. It was released on December 10, 2021, and has 11 tracks.
Tory does a few things on this album that make it as great as it is. One of these things is his vocals. His vocals are definitely his strong point. He has the perfect voice for an R&B album. He also found a way to blend multiple genres into one album. Alone at Prom has hints of R&B, hip-hop, and 80s pop in its songs. The album’s whole concept is built around ’80s music and is inspired by that era of music and aesthetics. Tory makes the album feel like an ’80s album by taking the best parts of that era and mixing them with more modern R&B. Additionally, he has lots of well-known songs from the ’80s that he samples and puts on his songs. For example, songs like Enchanted Waterfall, Pluto’s Last Comet, and Last Kiss of Nebulon all have 80s samples.
This album has so many great songs, but if I had to choose a favorite, it would be Lady of Namek. This song, like most on the album, has an 80s vibe to it and is super catchy. In this song, Lanez sings about going to prom with someone who was just a friend, but he wanted it to be more. By the end of the song, he is left alone, giving the album its name. The chorus on this song is very catchy, and it will get stuck in your head after just one listen. Another song that I like is The Color Violet. This is Tory’s most popular song, with over one billion streams on Spotify, and it deserves all the praise that it receives. This song talks about heartbreak, betrayal, and a fear of commitment through the metaphor of dancing. The song is a masterpiece, and if you have not listened to it yet, you need to as soon as possible.
Overall, I found this project to be very good and one of Tory Lanez’s best albums. All the songs hit hard, and there is not a single skippable song. I would rate this album an 8.6/10 and recommend it to anyone interested in this kind of music.
