Authorities have located the remains of five fallen skiers on the Adler glacier situated beneath the summit of Rimpfischhorn, a mountain in Switzerland close to the resort area of Zermatt, as announced in a statement released on Sunday by the Valais cantonal police. During their ascent of the Rimpfischhorn on Saturday, two climbers came across four left-behind pairs of skis but were unable to find the skiers who owned them, prompting them to notify emergency services, police, and Air Zermatt.
An Air Zermatt chopper carrying rescuers along with a physician flew through the region and swiftly identified the five deceased individuals. According to Radio Télévision Suisse, three of the remains were discovered roughly 1,600 feet underneath the deserted gear situated on an avalanche slope.
Set at an elevation of 13,776 feet, the Rimpfischhorn is located to the east of Zermatt and attracts those who enjoy backcountry exploration. Prior to finding the remains on the Adler glacier, Air Zermatt announced in their statement that they had completed what they described as a “difficult operation” that included rescuing two separate teams of two climbers each on the Fiescherhörner.
“During the rescue Friday evening, an Air Zermatt crew was forced to turn back due to adverse weather conditions. Then, after midnight, the crew made another attempt and managed to save the four climbers by executing a “precise hovering maneuver,” according to the Air Zermatt statement.”
