On Saturday, August 30th, the number 14-ranked Michigan Wolverines took on the unranked New Mexico Lobos for their season opener at Michigan Stadium. It was a somewhat close game for the most part, but New Mexico was unable to keep up with the new Michigan offense, and Michigan won the game 34-17. This was Bryce Underwood’s first collegiate game and his debut was amazing as he went 21-31 for 251 yards and 1 touchdown and had a 67.7 completion rate. This was a great sign for Michigan that Bryce Underwood will be the key to their future. Michigan also had their new running back, Justice Haines, who had 16 carries for 159 yards and 3 touchdowns. New Mexico had their new QB transfer, Jack Layne, who went 31/47 for 208 yards, 1 touchdown, and 3 interceptions. They also had Dorian Thomas, who had 10 catches for 71 yards and 2 touchdowns. This is a great sign for Michigan, as their offense was able to move the ball downfield consistently and had a forward pass whereas last year, Michigan was unable to throw the ball all season and they struggled on offense heavily. All in all, this was a great win for Michigan and this year is looking to be much better for Michigan.
