I think that Film Molecules by Tender Trap is pretty good but is stunk up with a few mediocre songs. It was released on July 16, 2002 with a CD and LP release mainly under K Records. It was their first album and features their hit single, “Oh Katrina”. It is mainly indie pop and indie rock. The production of this album was done in collaboration with the band and Harvey Birrell.
The band at that time consisted of Amelia Fletcher, Rob Pursey and John Stanley. Amelia Fletcher was the lead vocalist and guitarist, she also contributed to the songwriting process. Rob Pursey would also do guitar and songwriting but did the bass alongside the other two. John Stanely, also known as DJ Downfall, did drums and other programming. The addition of electronic sounds to their music created a bigger gap between their previous bands which was primarily twee pop.
There are 13 tracks, three of those are interludes while the rest are full-length songs. I wish that the interludes were longer, they all had unique sounds that would’ve worked pretty well as full on songs. Most of the songs are pretty good, my personal favourites are “That Girl” and “Son of Dorian Gray”. I don’t really care for “Emma” or “Talk in Song”, they aren’t really anything. Overall, it’s a pretty good album, it’s a little odd jumping between songs but nothing I can really hate.
I don’t think this is in the top five of Amelia Fletcher’s albums but it is for sure dang good. I’d give Film Molecules by Tender Trap a 3.2/5. I would rather recommend Sounds From the Gulf Stream or The Decline And Fall Of Heavenly, I think they give the same general vibe but are better, this album still has its gems though.
