Subnautica is a good mix of chill and scary at the same time. You crash land on an alien planet that’s completely underwater, and you basically just have to survive. At first it’s all peaceful, swimming around and looking at the cool fish and plants. But once you start diving deeper, it turns into a horror game real quick.
The best part about Subnautica is the atmosphere. The ocean looks amazing, with all the glowing creatures and colorful reefs everywhere. The music and sounds are also really good, like sometimes you’ll just hear weird noises in the distance and get worked up over nothing stupid reef backs had me terrified my first time playing. It makes you feel like you’re actually alone in a massive ocean, which is kind of awesome and creepy.
Gameplay-wise, it’s all about surviving and exploring. You gotta find food, make water, and materials to build stuff like bases and submarines. It’s really satisfying when you finally make something big, but it can get annoying when you realize the base requires massive amounts of power just to use a basic function. The game doesn’t really hold your hand either, so half the time you’re just trying to figure out where to go next.
Still, Subnautica isn’t perfect. Sometimes the controls feel weird like your jump being the X button instead of the A Button, and the performance can lag, especially in the deeper parts of the ocean. It also gets aggravating when you don’t know where to go next or when you lose your submarine because a reaper leviathan ate it. Building can be clunky too, and it’s easy to waste time trying to line stuff up correctly. These things don’t ruin the game, but they can get pretty annoying after a while.
Overall, Subnautica is a great game that mixes survival, mystery, and horror in a really unique way. It’s beautiful to look at and exciting to explore, even when it scares you half to death. Sure, it has some frustrating parts, but that’s part of what makes it memorable. If you like games that let you explore and figure things out on your own, Subnautica is definitely worth diving into.
