The crisp autumn night at Arrowhead Stadium buzzed as Detroit arrived in Kansas City, hopeful for an upset, which happened, and the final score was 30-17 with the Chiefs winning. The Lions struck first: after a methodical opening drive, kicker Jake Bates drilled a 28-yard field goal to put Detroit up 3-0. But the Chiefs, refusing to cede momentum, answered late in the first quarter when Patrick Mahomes found Xavier Worthy on a 6-yard strike. The extra point failed, and Kansas City led 6-3 heading into the second quarter.
In the second quarter, Detroit responded with finesse. Jared Goff marched the offense downfield, connecting with Jameson Williams on a 22-yard touchdown pass. Bates’ extra point gave the Lions a 10-6 lead. But Kansas City countered again just before halftime. Mahomes scrambled in from a yard out, and with Butker’s PAT, the Chiefs went into the break up 13-10.
The second half swung decisively in Kansas City’s favor. Early in the 3rd, Mahomes threaded a pass to Hollywood Brown for a 9-yard touchdown, pushing the Chiefs to 20-10. Detroit tried to strike back in the 4th: Goff lofted a dart to tight end Sam LaPorta in the end zone, narrowing the gap 20-17. But the Chiefs buried the comeback with a 3-yard scoring pass to Brown and later a field goal, sealing a 30-17 final.
As the clock wound down and the stadium lights dimmed, tempers flared. Detroit safety Brian Branch refused Mahomes’ postgame handshake, sparking an altercation with Chiefs receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster. The brief brawl ended with Smith-Schuster sporting a bloody nose, and coaches from both sides were forced to intervene. Branch was later suspended for his role.
