All Quiet on the Western Front; A Netflix Masterpiece

Joe Knickerbocker, Staff writer

All Quiet on the Western Front is a model for war story telling. Its stunning visuals and brutal action makes the film an authentic war story masterpiece. The film has some of the best shots I’ve seen in movies. Displaying scenic shots of nature and horrific imagery of war makes the film practically an art piece. The battle scenes are gut wrenching and wonderfully shot. The acting was great. But, the story I feel could have been more intriguing. It mainly follows a soldier’s time in the war with a group of his friends fighting along with him, filled with tragedy and touching moments. Although the story is told in a decent way. It itself isn’t that entertaining. I felt for the characters at moments, but I didn’t really care for them. Other war movies I’ve seen like 1917 made me care for the characters and what was going to happen to them. This film seems like it’s just using these characters to show the war side of the film. There are two sides to the story. One from the soldiers perspective fighting on the front line and the other being the political aspect of the country’s leaders coming to an agreement to end the war. Even though the story is something to desire, the film is undoubtedly a masterpiece war film. Not jam-packed with action but still an entertaining war film with great visuals, marvelous action, and even pretty exceptional music. All Quiet on the Western Front shows the horrors and hardships of war in a visualizing pleasant way that any viewer will enjoy. The film’s original audio is all in German but can be watched in English, but I turned on the German audio just to see what it was like and I ended up finishing the movie in German. Recently released on Netflix, this is a must see for history lovers. The movie has a critic score of 91% on Rotten Tomatoes and an audience score of 90%. Not only one of the best WWI movies of all time, but one of the best war movies of all time. 9/10
