Students Prepare Christmas Spirit, Survey Finds

Lillian Bates, Staff writer

With Thanksgiving over now, people all over the world are overwhelmed with the Christmas spirit. This of course, includes students at Ovid-Elsie high school. A total of 13 students were asked to complete a survey about the Christmas season, and the results are quite riveting. When asked what their favorite holiday activity is, seven responded sledding, four selected ice skating, and skiing and snowboarding both earned one vote. You can’t have a true Christmas without the music, so the students were asked what their favorite song is. Nine participants chose “All I Want for Christmas Is You” as their favorite, two chose “Feliz Navidad” and “Jingle Bells” and “Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer” were tied with one vote each.

An important tradition in many families is setting up and decorating the Christmas tree together, but it has been a debate for decades whether fake or real trees are superior. Out of 13 voters, eight of them voted that a real tree is the best, while five voted that they prefer a fake tree. Of course, we can’t forget the presents under the tree, so the participants were questioned on whether they would rather give or receive gifts. Nine students responded that they prefer giving gifts to others, while four students prefer receiving gifts.

Christmas is often a time for sweets and baking with family, so the participants were asked what their favorite Christmas dessert is. Nine students chose sugar cookies as their favorite sweet, four selected peppermint bark, and gingerbread and figgy pudding both had zero votes. It’s always nice to have a drink with your sweets, and the students were questioned on what is their favorite. The overall favorite drink is hot chocolate with nine votes, followed by eggnog with four votes, and peppermint tea with no votes.
