Stones’ Some Girls Classic Listen

Larz Ostrander, Staff writer

The Rolling Stones have made an awful lot of albums, varying in style as time goes on
and the band progresses. They have made 30 studio albums; not including live albums or
compilations or EPs. I recently gave the album Some Girls a listen all the way through, since
some of my favorites were on this album. I was thoroughly impressed with all the tracks on it.
My favorite song on this album is the song Miss You, which is the main reason I decided
to give the whole album a listen. Miss You is a legendary song to say the least. It came out in
the late 70s and I just heard it on the radio last week. Although that’s not really a shocker,
considering it’s the Rolling Stones, one of the most famous bands of all time. But I would say
they earned that title by making some amazing music. Miss You’s subject matter is pretty
self-explanatory; it’s a song about missing a girl. The music is the more impressive part. The
song is only really based on 2 chords, but is filled with some great licks from iconic guitarist
Keith Richards and a great sax line and solo.
Another famous single from this LP is Shattered, this is another song that instead of the
traditional up down up down feeling with the chorus and verse, it starts a little slow and builds
up. This song is almost disco-esque, it has some spectacular dance potential. This is one of
those songs that you hear in the car with your grandpa when he’s playing his favorite classic
rock station, and without letting him know you actually liked it you slyly pull out your phone and
like it on spotify.
On a different Note, a song written and performed by Keith Richards, Before They Make
Me Run is about Richards’ arrest for heroin possession. This song is pretty simple and sounds
kind of light-hearted. At first, I actually did not care for this song, mostly just due to throughout
the album I was really enjoying listening to Mick Jagger’s energetic vocals. When Richards
started to sing I was a little caught off guard by it, and let’s face it the performance was less than
fantastic. However, the semi-mediocre vocals only makes the song more charming. It’s a fun
little song about enjoying yourself before you get busted.
All in all, This album I’ll give a 7.5/10. I mean come on, it’s the Stones! Of course it’s
good.
