The Brains Out in the Dark Fills Unique Genre

I am reviewing Out in the Dark by The Brains. The Brains are a rock band from

Atlanta Georgia, that formed in the late 1970s. There isn’t really much to say about them, as
there is very limited info out there about them. Out in the Dark came out in 2015 and features
9 tracks. The music on the album seems very experimental and theatrical.
The lead track, Out in the Dark”was pretty good, it just had a weird intro. The next 2
tracks, Burn the Witch and Need you Now really remind me of Panic! at the Disco’s debut,
A Fever You Can’t Sweat Out. Some songs try to incorporate punk elements but they don’t
really fit with the theatrical vocal melodies. I also notice that many songs start pretty similarly
with a simple power chord part and some gnarly bass. This album is one of the most unique ones
reviewed yet. It just combines so many things I would have never thought of. Despite this, it
seems there is a pretty clear formula in this album. I enjoy many of the riffs, they are pretty sick
and have awesome tone. The guitarist spent a minute trying to get a perfect sound. It’s Alive
had quite a cool horror-western feel.
This album is a little bit of an odd one. It’s definitely original, and it doesn’t sound like
it’s from 2015. It seems like horror…theatre…?.. punk… western?? A lot of themes come into
play and I think that’s really cool! This album however just wasn’t really my cup of tea in
particular and for that, I’m going to give it a 6.5/10. I’m still not completely sure about it but
there are definitely some bops on there. I can see people jamming out to tracks like Lifetime
and Out in the Dark.
