Famous underground and highly influential rapper Brandon Mcartney popularly known as (Lil B, or The Based God) released BasedGods Pro Skater Oct. 23, 2023. Brandon most known for having a beef with NBA players, popularizing the term ”based” and having thousands of songs and hundreds of “Freestyle Albums” where he goes to the studio and one takes hundreds of songs, could be viewed as a non-serious goofy artist just making music for fun. Taking a look at his more serious work its no doubt he wouldn’t be counted as one of the best in the scene. Lil B was hopping on beats that were years ahead of their time. Between his beats and his bars Lil B isn’t afraid of experimenting and most of his hundred releases are a bit questionable. So when I dived into BasedGods Pro Skater there was no doubt in my mind going into this album that it would either be one of the most influential albums of the year in classic Lil B fashion, or one of the worst. It’s safe to assume its the latter, BasedGods Pro Skater encapsulates this very niche scene of playstation 2 skateboard video game music. Many of the songs such as Sk8 Or Die and I Just Wanna Skate, repeat the same bars about wanting to skate. In most Lil B songs he seems to base a lot of the signs around the name of the album. Lil B has a way of capturing a theme and making it last throughout his albums. This album encapsulates ps2 music for sure.
One song that stood out to me was More Orange Juice, which was about orange juice. All in all, I went in with high hopes and went out wanting to skateboard. Lil B’s BasedGods Pro Skater was a 1/10 I am still a Lil B fan and look forward to his next release.
