In the Wolverine’s first ranked game of the season, they had to take on the number one Texas Longhorns. The Wolverines would end up losing to Texas with a disappointing final score of 31-12. Michigan would then bounce back in their week 3 matchup against Arkansas State, winning 28-18. The Wolverines had an amazing ground performance with 3 of the 4 touchdowns scored being on the ground, and two of those coming from the rising star running back, Kalel Mullings. In total Michigan put up 301 rushing yards. Michigan would then prepare for their next week matchup with a lot to work on, with Davis Warren throwing 3 interceptions against Arkansas State. A few days after the Arkansas State game, quarterback Alex Orji would be named starter over Warren, after Warren’s constant struggle with keeping the ball. Going into the USC game, Michigan would get ranked down a spot from their previous rank after struggling offensively against Arkansas State, and they would be marked as underdogs at home. Michigan would start out strong on defense not allowing more than 150 yards total in the first half. Michigan would also be dominant on the ground, with two huge break away touchdowns from both running backs, Kalel Mullings and Donovan Edwards. The Wolverines would allow one field goal from USC and they would take it into half time 14-3. After halftime the wolverines Defense continued to stay strong but USC’s offense started to take control of the game. Miller Moss would find Duce Robinson in the end zone for a 9 yard touchdown pass after a long drive down field. Michigan would punt the ball away and give the ball back to USC. However Michigan was able to make a stand, with Will Johnson intercepting the ball at the 42 yard line and running it back all the way into the endzone for a pick 6. This interception would give Johnson the school record for most career pick 6’s, with an ironic number of 6. However, after Will Johnson found the endzone on defense, Dominic Zvada’s extra point kick would be blocked by USC’s defense, which would be huge later in the game. The USC offense would then drive all the way to the redzone, and on a third down Miller Moss would fumble the ball away out of a sack and Michigan’s defensive linemen, Kenneth Grant, would pick up the ball and attempt to run it back as far as he could. But USC would not give up, and on the same play, USC running back Woody Marks would strip the ball from Grant and give USC a new set of downs in Michigan Territory. Miller Moss would then find Jay Fair a few plays later for a 17 yard touchdown as time was running down in the third quarter. From there Michigan and USC would punt back and forth until USC finally scored again with Miller Moss finding Ja’Kobi Lane for a 24 yard touchdown. Michigan would keep struggling on offense and have to punt, but Michigan’s defense would continue to hold strong. With around 3 minutes left, Michigan eventually got the ball back, and Kalel Mullings would break away for a huge run on 3rd down to set up Michigan in the Red Zone. Mullings Would keep getting the ball and eventually on 4th and goal from the 1, Mullings would plow his way through the left side of the end zone to put michigan up 26-24, and Dominic Zvada whos kick was blocked earlier, would drill it through the uprights to put Michigan up by 3, 27-24. Because of the blocked PAT earlier, USC would have a chance to drive down the field and get a field goal with around 30 seconds left. After USC started out their drive promising, Michigan’s defense was able to seal the game, stopping USC on 4th down to get the ball back. Michigan would take victory formation and win the game with an odd stat of 290 rushing yards, and 32 passing yards. Michigan and USC both turned over the ball twice, with an Interception and fumble on USC’s side, and two fumbles from Michigan’s side. The rankings released would move Michigan up to the 12th spot, and USC would fall two spots to 13. Michigan is now 3-1, with their only loss being to number one ranked Texas, and their next game is at home in Ann Arbor vs Minnesota at Noon. The game will be streamable on FOX Sports and Fubo TV.
