Florida’s Broward County Public Schools decided to ban students from using cell phones and other communication devices for the entire school day. Before school starts students are required to have all phones off or in airplane mode the entire day. This new policy was debated among parents, teachers, administrators, and students. It went into effect in August. The reason for the ban was to make a difference in the classrooms. Students would talk more and not be distracted while doing their work. However, quickly after it started to stimulate some debate. People opposed to the ban had many safety concerts. Many were arguing that it could interfere with communication during emergencies. The public was pushing for change. A petition was issued into place asking for the school to reverse the ban. As of now, it has collected over 25,000 signatures. The discussion surrounding the ban is expected to continue. A district spokesperson stated that the board will be reviewing the survey results and feedback on the ban.
