The European Commission is fining Meta 797.72 Million Euros over “Abusive practices” used by Meta in marketing Facebook Marketplace. Meta is a multinational US company that controls many different services, including Instagram, Facebook, and Facebook Marketplace. Meta has been found to be using predatory marketing in other apps it controls, as it displays ads for that specific service over others.
With this, Facebook forces you to sign up for Facebook Marketplace along with the app itself, if you wish to join Facebook. These cases are, “in breach of Article 102 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union” according to The European Commission. Along with the fine of 797.72 Million Euros, Meta is also forced to end this conduct immediately.
The European Commission has also explained how this is not technically illegal, however big companies still have the responsibility to not abuse their powers on their websites. All in all, Meta will be forced to change their actions, and pay the 797.72 Million Euro fine to continues operations in Europe.
