Donald Trump is responsible for Tik Tok’s return, delaying the ban. During his first presidency, he was the one responsible for the idea banning the app, but now people are thanking him that it’s still here.
Trump first brought up the idea to ban the app in July 2020. But, just this month, Trump has stated on social media that he would issue an executive order which would be delaying the ban. Trump’s legal authority to unilaterally decide not to enforce the law, which passed with lots of independent support in April.
The reason that the ban was first brought to the public’s attention was because of national security safety from China’s influence. Before Trump’s stance changed, he stated that China is stealing our data and is able to track certain information with TikTok.
Something working in Trump’s favor as of recently is working with tech companies and owners like Elon Musk, owner of Tesla and X. Bill Bishop, a China analyst who has been closely monitoring the back-and-forth, said, “This is one of those things where the domestic politics have become so upside down and crazy that it turns out there’s only upside for Trump now.” Trump would claim that the restriction was implemented under the tenure of outgoing President Joe Biden, he claimed.
Although there were companies that violated the law that aimed to force its TikTok sale by its China-based parent company, he said that they will not be held accountable due to an order being put in place. Once Trump changed his stance on his opinion on TikTok, he joined the app himself and gained a large following. “I have a warm spot in my heart for TikTok,” he said during a December news conference. “TikTok had an impact.”
