President Donald Trump pardoned 1,500 convicted rioters from the January 6th attack on the capitol. It was January 6th, 2021 when furious Trump supporters stormed the capitol in hopes of reversing the election results for Joe Biden. It’s been four years since then. Trump’s sweeping pardons have received backlash from many citizens and police officers who were guarding the capitol. Even some republicans have criticized Trump’s decision to pardon the rioters.
Political extremism experts warn that Trump’s pardons will boost extremist group activities, and critics claim that pardons undermine the law and accountability. Republican Senator, Sen. Lindsey Graham criticized the pardon. Graham, like many others, believes that it may lead to more violence.
Federal judges have also raised their concerns, one federal judge says that these pardons will lead to a dangerous specter of future violence. Another judge, Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly writes, “Dismissal of charges, pardons after convictions, and commutations of sentences will not change the truth of what happened on January 6, 2021.”
