May 12th, 2022. This is an alternative album that explores the complexities of what it is like to
grow up religious. This album has 13 songs that range
from three minutes to 9 minutes.
Preacher’s Daughter features many impressive songs
but one that stood out to me is, American Teenager
This song is popular on TikTok and is where Ethel Cain
originally blew up. Olivia Rodrigo made a cover of this
song which has also received much love. This song was
also featured on former president, Barack Obama’s 2023
Spotify wrapped. This is a positive song that symbolizes
a reminiscence of Cain’s teenage years while trying to
figure out who she is because she grew up in a religious
household. Sun Bleached Flies tells the story of trying
to figure out life as an adult alone because she does not
relate herself to her family anymore because they do not
accept her since they are extremely religious.
Strangers may not be a song for everyone, this song is very odd in the sense of what it
means, and not many people would relate to it but it has been a sensation over Tiktok for the
past few months. Many people praise Cain for her amazing vocals and lyricism but her lyrics
can be very unrelatable at times. For example, this song is about having an emotional bond with
an abuser/kidnapper which I would hope nobody would relate to.
In conclusion, Ethel Cain has very out-of-character lyrics that portray pictures that many
can’t even fathom but she has incredible vocals that make her music undeniably pleasing. I
would rate this album a 9/10.
