Former central banker Mark Carney will become Canada’s next Prime Minister. On
Sunday, March 9, 2025, the governing Liberal Party elected him to lead the country as it deals
with trade wars with U.S. President Donald Trump. Previous Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau,
announced his resignation in January and Mark Carney won the battle for Prime Minister by a
landslide victory, winning 85% of the citizens’ votes.
Mark Carney stated, “There is someone who is trying to weaken our economy. Donald
Trump, as we know, has put unjustified tariffs on what we build, what we sell, and how we make
a living. He is attacking Canadian families and we cannot let him succeed,” Trump’s
unnecessary tariffs are not the only thing upsetting Canadians. His talk of creating Canada as
the 51st state in the United States has infuriated Canadian citizens and is causing them to do
things such as avoid trips to America and avoid buying American goods.
Trump has postponed 25% tariffs on many goods from Canada for a month, but he has
threatened tariffs on other items such as aluminum and dairy products. Mark Carney has made
it clear that he cannot trust Trump or America anymore, and has claimed these are the dark
days brought on by the United States. Carney is a former Goldman Sachs executive and
afterward became the deputy governor of the Bank of Canada in 2003. He has done many great
things for Canada and many Canadians are ready for the start of this new leader and new
country.
