My first impression of the 2020 Netflix original film Enola Holmes was that it was going to be a mysterious historical drama and I was ready to watch some of my favorite actors work in the film.
The main actors/characters in the Enola Holmes film are Millie Bobby Brown (Enola Holmes), Sam Claflin (Mycroft Holmes), Henry Cavill (Sherlock Holmes), Helena Bonham Carter (Mrs. Holmes), Fiona Shaw (Miss Harrison), Louis Partridge (Lord Tewksbury), and Adeel Akhtar (Inspector Lestrade). The movie was directed by Harry Bradbeer (A is for Acid, The Brides in the Bath).
After discovering that her mother has vanished, intrepid teen Enola Holmes sets off to search for her while using her sleuthing skills to outsmart both of her older brothers Sherlock and Mycroft. Along the way she finds clues that lead to her mother and also finds herself helping a runaway lord. This film is based on the first book in the series of the same name by Nancy Springer.
A quote from Rotten Tomatoes reviewer Sr. Rose Pacatte states, “I was surprised at how deftly Enola unfolds the mystery, but it is also about women’s suffrage and feminism in late 19th-century England. It shows that there are alternative ways to resolve conflict and redress wrongs other than violence.” The rating on the Rotten Tomatoes website for Enola Holmes is 91% Fresh Tomatoes from all critics.
My personal rating for this film would be a 4 ½ out of 5 because it was very well executed and the acting was fenomenale. The beginning was a little confusing and messy at first, but it did come together nicely.
I do recommend this movie to anyone who’s looking for a mysterious movie to keep you entertained and on your toes.
