The last track from the Nova music festival before Hama’s attack was played as families and friends of the victims gathered at the site where at least 370 people were killed a year ago. After briefly playing the track, people stood for a moment of silence, joined by politicians from Israel and around the world. The October 7 attacks and Israel’s relentless response in Gaza have established the Middle East, while the scale of the killing and destruction have horrified people worldwide.
Herzog began the day with a moment of silence at 6:29 am. The time of the attack started exactly a year ago – at kibbutz Reim, the site of the Nova music festival where Hamas-led fighters killed 364 people. But within only a few moments, a woman’s piercing wail of grief broke the quiet, and booms echoed from the fighting in Gaza, just a few kilometers away. President Isaac Herzog kicked off the commemorations on Monday, with memorials held to honor 1,139 Israelis and nearly 100 people still in captivity in Gaza.
After briefly playing the same trance music that was blared during the festival, hundreds of family members and friends of the victims stood for a moment of silence, many of them crying, as Herzog met the crowd.
