Chet Baker is an American treasure, during his musical career in the 1950’s he was renowned
for his boyish looks and charm. Today im reviewing his signature album Chet Baker sings where
we view his skills as a vocalist and as a trumpet player. Im very unfamiliar with the genre of jazz
music, my grandpa “put me on” some of chet bakers classics from this album and I decided it
would be beneficial to take a full look at it.
The first song on this album That Old Feeling compels me as an interesting way to start an
album, its fun and emotional. It captures Chet Bakers unique voice which at times sounds
underdeveloped, perhaps underwhelming. Compared to his contemporaries around the time I
would say chet bakers draw is how relaxed and cool he sounds. His voice is powerful in his
minimalistic vocal styling.
Its Always You – Vocal Version Is one of my favorite songs off this thing, the piano is really
interesting and the lyrics are beautiful. I can imagine a lot of people singing this song, but theres
something about chet’s soft tonality that amplifies the simple lyrics. Its romantic, and I feel that
this song really captures a unique perspective of love.
My Grandpa really enjoys the song My Funny Valentine which I wish I understood more. Its
feels really drawn out and a little boring at times. Maybe its because I was raised in the
generation of instant gratification that inhibits my ability to enjoy this song (MAYBE) but Im not
gonna write it off as bad.
All in All I did have a good time listening too this album, Favorite tracks : Its Always You, I Fall In
Love Too Easily, That Old Feeling.
