Umbrella Academy Sci-Fi Drama Worth Watching

Staff

The Umbrella Academy is a 10-episode, sci-fi drama TV show on Netflix. Made in 2019, it is definitely a show worth watching.

At noon on Oct. 1st, 1989, 43 women around the world gave birth at the same time. The unnatural part was that none of these women had been pregnant prior. This caught the attention of billionaire Sir Reginald Hargreeves, who located and adopted seven of the children. Each of the kids adopted by Hargreeves had a power; and Hargreeves trained the kids for years to become crime-fighters called The Umbrella Academy. Over 15 years later, after the seven have gone their separate ways, they are finally brought together by their Father’s death, but also face arguments and family mysteries.

The Umbrella Academy was directed by Jeremy Webb and based off the Dark Horse Comic By Gerard Way. The script greatly expresses each child’s greatly different personalities, as well as many different themed scenes, from sweet romance to intricately choreographed fight scenes.

Ellen Page’s character, Vanya, didn’t have any powers, and was therefore excluded from everything as a child. Page’s acting does a great job of expressing how Vanya’s childhood trauma still affected her as an adult.

I would rate this series 4 out of 5 stars. The good script, interesting plot, and twists definitely makes The Umbrella Academy a must-see for any sci-fi drama fanatic.
