Police Officer, Andrew Duarte, age of 30, was killed in a Pennsylvania hospital shooting on Saturday, Feb. 22nd. Authorities responded to the incident around 11:00 a.m..The shooting happened at UPMC Memorial Hospital, located just outside of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Five people were injured after the gunman, Diogenes Archangel-Ortiz, held them as hostages. As of now, no motive has been released. Police ended up getting to Ortiz, and shooting him down.
Duarte’s girlfriend, Zanna Morris, said; “I’m shattered. Devastated. He was the love of my life.” Morris said that Duarte died saving others. Community members are shattered and show sympathy for the fallen police officer, another injured officer, and the injured hospital staff. Three staff members were shot including a doctor, a nurse, and a custodian who are all in stable condition currently. There were no patients injured in this attack. Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro described the attack as “the act of a coward.”
Unfortunately, there have been several hospital shootings within recent years. Although several have occurred recently, health care workers are the least likely to suffer from fatal injuries compared to other professions. More details will be released later, when more information is collected. Morris and many others are grieving the loss of Duarte and are devastated about this harsh act of violence.
