Coffee prices in the U.S. were up 18.3% in January from a year ago. Over five years the government reported coffee prices rose 47%. Coffee has been a morning ritual for Chandra Donelson ever since she was able to start drinking it. But the rising prices have made the 35-year-old woman quit drinking coffee.

There have been years of coffee prices steadily climbing in the country which has been causing a lot of coffee lovers to quit drinking coffee everyday. They don’t even switch over to cheaper brews, they have just been quitting drinking coffee all together. Data from Toast, a payment platform used by more than 150,000 restaurants, found the median price of a regular hot coffee in the U.S. had climbed to $3.61 in December, with wide variation by location. 

The tariffs impacted lots of imports of coffee in 2025 and they were removed. Lots of climate issues like drought in Vietnam and heavy rain in Indonesia are blamed for reducing yields of coffee crops and driving up global prices. This affected many Americans as two-thirds of Americans drink coffee. 

According to the Coffee Association, its surveys show coffee consumption is broadly holding steady despite price hikes. But  because of the cost of everything from rent to beef, others are shaking up their habit. Lots of people are looking for a substitute for coffee everyday. It is getting hard for people to go without their everyday coffee.
