There are rapidly intensifying storm warnings Saturday for New York City, New Jersey, and Boston. Communities along the East Coast prepared for the Sunday arrival with heavy snow and dangerous winds. The National Weather service increased its assessment of how severe the storms really are which were projected to be much milder just a couple days earlier.
The weather service said there was about 1 to 2 feet of snow possible in many areas as there were blizzard warnings in New York City, Long Island and many other surrounding cities. There was also flooding possible in parts of New York and New Jersey as well. The storm arrived Sunday morning in areas around Washington then to Philadelphia and New York City then eventually reaching Boston in the evening.
The weather service also mentioned that the storm could begin as rainfall in some places before it will eventually get worse with heavy snowfall expected later on. They warned that with the storm they would have winds 25 to 35 mph which would make traveling dangerous. There was many scattered downed tree limbs and power outages possible due to the amount of snow falling.
Many officials scrambled around to prepare for the storm which they knew about days before and originally believed that the impact would not have been as severe as it was. The New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani said the city would put in more effort to deal with major snowfall weeks ago while officials help off on deciding to open schools the following Monday. New York brought in additional snow clearing equipment from outside the city and planned to use it to focus on clearing bus stops and crosswalks.
