An armed man was shot and killed after entering the secure perimeter at President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida early Sunday morning. The man was seen carrying a gun and a gas can when he made his way past the security gate and went inside the restricted area. He was shot by the U.S. Secret Service agents and a Palm Beach County sheriff’s deputy when he raised the shotgun toward the officers after being told to drop it. President Trump and the first lady were not at the resort at the time because they were in Washington D.C. and there were no protectors on the property.
Authorities identified the intruder as a 21-year-old man from North Carolina whose family had reported him missing before the incident. The Secret Service said he may have bought the shotgun while driving south to Florida and officers confronted him just inside the north gate, he set down the fuel can but then pointed the gun at them, which led to the shooting. No law enforcement officers were injured during the event.
The FBI and other agencies are now investigating what happened and why the man tried to enter the secure property. Officials have not yet determined a clear motive for his actions. They are checking things like travel records, personal history, and possible mental health issues to learn more about why he did this. FBI leaders have also asked nearby residents to check home security camera footage for additional clues.
Mar-a-Largo is a private club and resort owned by President Donald Trump that also serves as a frequently used residence when he is in Florida. Because of its connection to the President, it has high security and is protected by the Secret Service. Incidents like this one are rare but show the strict security rules that are in place to protect people and important locations. The man’s family and friends are still reacting to the news as the investigation continues.
