Iran picked a new leader, choosing the son of the late Ayatollah, Mojtaba Khamenei, to take over. U.S. President Donald Trump jumped into the discussion, saying he wanted a role in deciding who should lead Iran, which quickly drew attention.
The choice was announced after weeks of debate inside Iran. Trump’s comments stood out because they suggested the United States should influence Iran’s leadership, something Iranian officials strongly pushed back on. The decision came out of Tehran, while reactions spread from Washington, D.C., and other capitals.
This all happened soon after Iran’s leadership council met to pick a successor following the Ayatollah’s death. Trump made his remarks around the same time, adding more pressure to the moment. The council met in private and voted for the Ayatollah’s son, saying the country needed “…stability and continuity.” Trump said Iran’s leadership affects U.S. security and global politics. Iran officials responded that foreign countries have no right to shape its decisions.
