The Album Room for Squares by John Mayer released on June 5th, 2001 is an acoustic album and one of the best of its time. This was one of Mayer’s first albums and it was quickly loved after people heard his expert guitar playing and excellent lyricism. Overall the album is very refreshing and youthful, yet seems like it was created by a veteran artist.
The album’s sound is centered around warm acoustic guitar, light percussion, and very subtle yet strong electric embellishments. The production is very clean and polished but not flashy, allowing Mayer’s guitar, tone, and voice to stay the main focus. No Such Thing and Why Georgia are some of the main tracks that give off coffee shop vibes and a certain sense of intimacy. Compared to some of Mayer’s later albums that are more blues-focused, Room for Squares is lighter and more pop sounding, but it sets the groundwork for Mayer’s albums.
The album explores what it’s like to be in your early twenties and experiencing the restlessness of being a young adult stepping into the real world. Why Georgia stands out with the theme with its self-questioning lyrics and references to a quarter life crisis. While 3×5 is a song that gives a reflection on memories. Mayer’s writing is straightforward but very personal and emotionally honest, the lines feel very rooted in early-2000’s sentimentality, the themes remain relatable and sincere.
Mayer’s vocals are smooth and relaxed through the whole album, yet it has rasp to give the song’s personality. His guitar work is masterful and tasteful, with many guitarists trying to replicate it on their own covers yet it fails to compare to Mayer’s originals. Some highlights on the album are No Such Thing, Back to You and Neon which shows the skill that Mayer has and it would show in some of his later projects.
Room for Squares succeeds through its blend of strong melodies, clean production, and excellent storytelling. This is my favorite album of Mayer’s. It has a lot of charm and every track is cohesive with one another. My personal favorite tracks are Love Song for No One and My Stupid Mouth. Fans of acoustic, folk, and soft rock music will have plenty to enjoy when listening to this album. This album shows the start of Mayer’s musical career and in my opinion it is a strong start. Score 9/10.
