The Michigan State Spartans returned to the Breslin Center Thursday night to try and keep their perfect start intact against San Jose State. The game was highlighted by some big performances from Kohler, putting up 17 points and 18 rebounds for MSU. Another member of the front court, Cooper, also scored 17 in the solid win for MSU, 79-60.
Michigan State had a strong first half, leading 46-23 at halftime. MSU had a lot of momentum in this game due to some gravity-defying dunks from Carr and some excellent rebounding; MSU had 45 rebounds to San Jose’s 26. Some great transition offense and defense helped MSU control the pace of the game, and some outside shooting from Michigan State’s Teng made them almost untouchable.
San Jose State didn’t have only dull spots through the game as Colby Harland posted a solid 22 points, leading all scorers. Forward Moundi also had a double-double, having 13 points and 11 boards. That same success wouldn’t be the case for the rest of San Jose State as they shot 0-10 on their first attempts of the night and played some unexceptional defense in the first half.
In the end, Michigan State walked out with a win and did so very easily to improve to 3-0 on the season, while San Jose State still looks to get their first win after falling to 0-3. A dominant performance from Michigan State gives them a lot of confidence for the rest of the season, which is needed due to their vigorous out-of-conference schedule. MSU’s next game is November 18th, where they look to go toe to toe with Kentucky in what looks to be a great game.
