The Detroit Tigers hosted the Baltimore Orioles this past Tuesday, March 17, at Publix Field at Joker Marchant Stadium in a matchup that turned into a tie between the teams with a score of 1-1. Justin Verlander took the mound for Detroit and looked remarkably sharp for a spring training outing, tossing 4.2 innings while recording six strikeouts. He surrendered only one earned run, maintaining a commanding presence throughout his appearance. For much of the early afternoon, both teams struggled to find any offensive rhythm, as the starting rotations dominated the game.
The stalemate was finally broken in the top of the fifth inning when Baltimore’s Bryan Ramos connected for a solo home run off Verlander. That hit provided the Orioles with a narrow 1-0 lead and served as one of the few instances where a batter truly squared up against Detroit’s veteran ace. Following Verlander’s exit, the Tigers’ bullpen—including veteran Kenley Jansen—managed to keep the deficit at a single run. However, Baltimore’s pitching staff was equally disciplined, with starter Chris Bassitt delivering over five innings of shutout baseball to keep the Tigers off the scoreboard.
Detroit finally manufactured a response late in the eighth inning to even the score. After Max Clark entered the game as a substitute and reached base, he eventually crossed the plate following a wild pitch by Orioles reliever J. Espada. While it wasn’t the product of a massive hitting streak, the run provided a much-needed spark for the home crowd. The tension increased in the bottom of the ninth when the Tigers managed to load the bases, creating a prime opportunity for a walk-off victory, though they were ultimately unable to drive in the winning run.
As is common in Grapefruit League play, the contest concluded in a 1-1 tie after nine full innings. Although the lack of a definitive winner was slightly underwhelming, the Tigers’ pitching staff’s performance was a significant takeaway, as they limited a talented Orioles lineup to few opportunities. Detroit finished the day with four total hits, indicating that while the defense and pitching are rounding into mid-season form, the bats are still searching for consistency as Opening Day approaches.
